April 4 we celebrate our IV Symposium Technical in the RiojaForum of Logroño, where we are unveiling the secrets of the precision nutrition for the vineyard. More than 150 growers and technicians, convened jointly with our distributor Martinez Carra, listened intently during the whole day the interventions of experts, who gave us the keys to getting the best performance out of our vineyard.

The first expert to speak was Ramon Pelegri, Manager at COMPO EXPERT Spain, that was a brief tour through the history of COMPO EXPERT, and encouragement to the audience to learn with the experts of first level that they would pass by the stage of the IX Symposium Technical.

?We are experts in plant nutrition. We do not sell subscriptions.? The first sentence of Ramón makes clear the philosophy and objectives of COMPO EXPERT, a company with great authority on the proper development of the crops through specific solutions developed through R+D+i.

He stressed the breadth of the catalog of COMPO EXPERT, with brands as renowned as Basfoliar, Hakaphos, NovaTec, Blaukorn,... A catalog that has been expanded this year with the Range of Ecological solutions, especially developed and certified for the ecological agriculture.

The next turn in the IV Symposium Technical was for Dr. Victoria Hernandez, a researcher at the UPM, and an expert in plant nutrition, particularly in leaf fertilization. During his presentation he gave the keys to the successful implementation of this technique in the vineyard.

The first thing to highlight is that the ?foliar nutrition is a complementary technique to the fertilization of the fund? and is usually applied on those stages of the cycle of the vine that require extra nutrients: sprouting, flowering, formation and development of the fruit.

In addition, it is important to identify those situations in which it is very advisable to apply fertilizer, foliar, as are problems of solubility in the soil, gaps and transitional phases of high demand for nutrients.

Finally, Victoria showed us some interesting conclusions drawn from the studies carried out during the last few years. Thus, the success of foliar fertilization depends on factors such as the surface of the plant (more or less wettability), the degree of stress suffered by the plant or the opening stomatal. At this point I emphasize that it is important to know which variety of vine we are working, as there are varieties that perform the opening stomatal night, being able to make this work in the vineyard to those hours to improve the effectiveness of the treatment.

After the coffee break, took the word the Dr. Enrique Garcia-Escuredo, Deputy director of the Institute of Ciencicas of Vine and Wine (ICVV), well-known researcher of the vineyard that gave keys and parameters to be taken into account in the proper management of the vineyard. In particular, during his speech focused on the correct handling of potassium in the nutrition of the vineyard.

?The major sink for potassium in the vineyard is the cluster,? said Enrique to the audience. So, you can identify the period more demanding of nutrients, which corresponds with the period of flowering-fruit-set.

Enrique pointed out that it is very important to control the deficit of potassium in the vine, as this problem can cause problems of development and performance. It is also important to correct the deficit of this nutrient as it can cause problems that affect the later stages of wine making, such as reduction of sugar concentration, color and increase in acidity, which lowers the quality in the final product.

?Drought situations, soil structure, sandy and with low capacity of retention of potassium, excess nitrogen,... are situations in which you have to watch the potassium in the vine,? remarked Dr. Henry, who ended his intervention by giving some guidelines for establishing a good plan of fertilization potassium in vineyard.

Finally, the agronomist and the oenologist Rodrigo Martins took the stage to present the results obtained in the trials, which was in conjunction to our colleague Peter Cabanita, which had as its goal to improve the quality parameters of the wine through the foliar nutrition.

?Climate change will affect our wine-producing areas, decreasing the nutrients available for the vineyard. Foliar fertilization arises as a complement to the usual practice for plant nutrition to compensate for the lack of nutrient?, with this sentence began his presentation by Rodrigo.

Then, next to Peter Cabanita and explained in detail the method of work done in the trials, where they worked with plans of plant nutrition developed by COMPO EXPERT-based Basfoliar Ca, Basfoliar Kelp and Solubor, Zitrilon and Fetrilon Combi.

The most interesting of these essays were the results obtained which show that the plans of nutrition products COMPO EXPERT improve the color parameters and the content of beneficial compounds (resveratrol, anthocyanins and phenolic compounds) in the final product. In addition, in blind tasting, the wines made from the vineyard's treaty got a best score in overall quality that the vineyard witness.

The day ended with a time of debate and audience questions to panelists prior to the food where they could continue with an enjoyable networking.

A successful journey thanks to the support of our dealer Martinez Carra and the organization of all of the equipment COMPO EXPERT I to announce that we are already preparing our V Symposium Technical!
